《國家報》指出 ，門德斯清楚巴薩財政狀況不佳 ，但仍然不希望法蒂簽下一份對他而言並不公平的合同 。門德斯希望法蒂與巴薩簽下一份兩三年的短約，違約金數額也從10億歐元下降到一個豪門可以接受的相對高價位 。
門德斯的意圖非常明確 。如果巴薩重建失敗的話 ，法蒂可以離開諾坎普去其他豪門 ，如今就有曼城在追逐法蒂的消息傳了出來 。如果巴薩重建成功的話 ，法蒂也可以在短約接近到期時要求巴薩為其進行大幅度加薪。但從巴薩的角度而言 ，門德斯的想法完全沒有保障俱樂部利益 ，這讓紅藍軍團高層非常憤怒。雙方如果短時間內都不願讓步 、無法取得一致的話 ，這次的續約談判很可能變成一場漫長的拉鋸戰 。
