葡萄牙在本屆歐洲杯與匈牙利 、洲杯法國以及德國分在一個小組，金靴而在這個公認的尘埃死亡之組中 ，C羅發揮出色 ，他三場比賽全部進球 ，其中對戰匈牙利與法國的比賽梅開二度 ，在對戰德國的比賽中也打入一球 。
在1/8淘汰賽對戰比利時的比賽中 ，C羅沒有進球 ，而葡萄牙最終0-1輸給了對手無緣八強 。盡管葡萄牙早早結束了本屆歐洲杯之旅 ，但是C羅卻憑借著五個進球和一個助攻的數據成為了本屆歐洲杯的金靴 。
除了C羅外 ，本屆歐洲杯打入五個進球的還有捷克的希克 ，但是這位球員僅打入5個進球 ，沒有助攻，而C羅還助攻一次 。按照金靴獎的規則 ，相同進球的情況下先看球員的助攻次數 。因此C羅也得以順利的贏得歐洲杯金靴。C羅已經是歐洲杯正賽的射手王 ，而且本屆又拿到了歐洲杯的金靴 ，同時在2016年的歐洲杯還奪冠 。可以說，C羅已經成為了歐洲杯的第一人 。
