由於絕大多數隊員抵達多哈時間較晚 ，利亚澳大利亞隊直到當地時間8月31日晚 ，队备动主北京時間9月1日淩晨才進行了抵達賽地後的战工作被首次合練 。相比於中國隊 ，帅仍作為“主隊”的坚信澳大利亞隊在備戰方麵顯然被動了許多。不過球隊主帥阿諾爾德仍堅信 ，面对自己的国足球隊可以在首場比賽中全取3分 。
據了解 ，拿分以阿諾爾德為主教練的利亚澳大利亞隊教練組此前已提前抵達多哈 ，並為球隊在前方的队备动主訓練做準備。不過 ，战工作被由於此次躋身澳大利亞隊12強賽前2輪比賽大名單陣容的帅仍27名球員中，除效力於悉尼FC俱樂部的坚信後衛格蘭特1人來自澳超外 ，其餘全部為海外球員 。面对他們12強賽征途的国足始發地也不同 ，因此抵達多哈的時間也不同 。
據悉，在當地時間8月30日晚中國隊進行室外訓練時 ，已抵達多哈駐地酒店報到澳大利亞隊國腳僅有13人 ，也就是全部參訓陣容的一半左右 。而在當地時間8月31日全隊進行抵達多哈後首練的時候 ，包括史密斯在內的部分球員仍無法參加全隊合練。這也嚴重影響了球隊備戰質量。
雖然在征調球員的問題上 ，澳大利亞隊遭遇了諸多困難與麻煩 ，但阿諾爾德對於麾下弟子們的能力始終保持著高度信任 。他表示 ：“可能我們在備戰過程中的確遇到了這樣或者那樣的問題。但這並不會影響我們球隊的戰鬥力 。經曆了40強賽後 ，球員間早已建立了默契 。”阿諾爾德的話不無道理，在此番應征入隊的27名澳大利亞隊國腳中 ，除了穆伊 、羅吉奇和阿爾紮尼等為數不多的球員歸隊外 ，大部分球員都參加過今年6月進行的40強賽 。對阿諾爾德而言，遺憾的是隊長萊基以及主力前鋒麥克拉倫因故雙雙缺席 。
