對於中國球迷來說，自然關注的是亞洲球隊與南美球隊的較量 ，因為國足參加了世預賽亞洲區12強賽，但B組6輪戰罷 ，僅取得1勝2平3負的成績 ，積5分 ，排在積分榜第五位 。國足想要獲得亞洲區的附加賽資格，首先要取得12強賽B組第三名 ，然後擊敗亞洲區A組第三名 ，才能夠獲得與南美球隊較量的機會 。而有機會獲得南美參加附加賽資格的球隊 ，包括烏拉圭等 。顯而易見，國足進軍2022年卡塔爾世界杯的希望已經十分渺茫了 ，甚至連亞洲區附加賽資格都拿不到。
