蘭帕德接著說：“我們在積分榜末端位置 ，而對手則為榜首競爭 ，這是一個很容易做出判罰的決定 。我不知道為什麽會發生這種事，當你沒時間考慮時 ，可能會做出錯誤的判罰 ，但當時他們有兩分鍾時間來檢查這個手球 。如果不是不稱職的話 ，就需要有人站出來解釋為什麽這麽判 。”
曼城主帥瓜迪奧拉解釋稱 ：“那是對方球員越位在先 ，比賽有VAR，這個（手球）動作前他們越位在先 。”而曼城球員福登則表示：“我隻是在祈禱那不是點球 。我沒有看清楚 ，但我的心都提起來了。”曼城後衛斯通斯表示 ：“那一刻我沒有很好地角度看清發生了什麽 。球被解圍了 ，VAR也進行了檢查，我們當時隻能等待判罰結果 。”
不過《郵報》 、《鏡報》等多家媒體指出 ，羅德裏手球未判罰並不是因為埃弗頓球員越位在先 。當時主裁判第一時間是示意越位 ，但隨後VAR回放認為 ，沒有確鑿的證據證明足球打在了羅德裏的手球區域內 ，因此宣布並非禁區內手球 ，這次判罰和是否越位無關 。
