範加爾目前擔任荷蘭國家隊主帥 ，去那球队他在本周表示 ：“我認為滕哈格是范加偉大的教練 ，一位偉大的曼联教練對曼聯來說是很好的選擇 。但曼聯是拆台一家商業俱樂部 ，對於教練來說 ，這是個艱難的選擇 。我不會給滕哈格建議，但他應該選擇一家足球俱樂部 ，而不是商業俱樂部。”
範加爾曾在2014年至2016年執教過曼聯 ，並率隊獲得了足總杯冠軍 。但範加爾在曼聯的執教生涯整體而言並不成功 ，他和曼聯俱樂部高層 、部分球員 、曼聯球迷之間都有矛盾。也許正是那段並不愉快的執教經曆 ，讓範加爾勸說後輩滕哈格別去曼聯 。
除了滕哈格之外，曼聯的新主帥候選人還有波切蒂諾、洛佩特吉、恩裏克，不過西班牙國家隊主帥恩裏克目前也沒有執教曼聯的想法 。恩裏克在西班牙對冰島的賽前新聞發布會上表示 ：“我會和西班牙一起參加卡塔爾世界杯 ，怎麽還有疑問 ？我必須重複說多少次 ？沒有比在卡塔爾世界杯代表我的祖國參賽更讓我興奮的。至於之後會發生什麽 ，讓我們到時候再看 。”
