而這也導致了一些誤判的系统發生 ，最典型的欧足例子就是葡萄牙對戰塞維利亞的比賽 。葡萄牙憑借若塔的梅開二度 ，上半場2:0領先塞維利亞，但下半場被頑強的塞維利亞連扳兩球 ，2-2扳平 。最具爭議的一幕出現在比賽讀秒階段，C羅接到隊友門德斯的長傳球麵對門將淩空推射 ，皮球滾向球門 ，越過門線後被米特羅維奇滑鏟解圍 ，裁判認定判罰無效 。由於沒有VAR技術 ，這一錯誤也導致了葡萄牙未能贏下三分 ，賽後關於VAR應該啟用的討論多了起來。
歐足聯給出的解釋是 ，由於疫情蔓延為後勤造成了難度和風險 ，此前在世界杯歐洲區預選賽中使用VAR係統的計劃被推遲 。而在北京時間8月5日，歐足聯在官網宣布，在得到了國際足聯的同意後，在今年的9月份開始 ，歐足聯組織的團隊將在主場足協提供的體育場內操作VAR ，並使用歐足聯VAR供應商提供的專用車輛 。世界杯歐洲區預選賽剩餘比賽中將采用VAR係統。
