4月27日 ，女足從國際足聯傳來消息 ，东京東京奧運會足球比賽賽程於26日正式公布 。奥运中國女足與巴西隊的战对阵巴小組賽首場比賽將於北京時間7月21日下午4點在地理位置距離東京較遠的宮城體育場舉行 。
東京奧組委公布的西决行信息顯示 ，中國女足本屆奧運會首戰的赛月場地宮城體育場位於2011年日本東北大地震受災地區宮城縣 ，球場可容納49000多人 ，日进是女足2002年男足世界杯的賽場之一 。
中國女足小組賽第二輪與讚比亞隊的东京比賽同樣在宮城體育場舉行 ，開賽時間為北京時間7月24日下午4點 。奥运第3輪與荷蘭隊的战对阵巴比賽將於北京時間7月27日晚7點半在橫濱國際體育場舉行 。
由於中 、西决行日兩國時差僅為一小時 ，赛月因此這樣的日进日常安排實際也非常適宜國內球迷觀看比賽直播 。
共有12支球隊參加東京奧運會女足比賽 ，女足被平均分在3個小組內先進行小組賽 。規則顯示 ，各組前兩名以及兩個成績最好的第3名球隊晉級淘汰賽（8強） ，之後1/4決賽、半決賽 、季軍爭奪戰 、決賽相繼進行 。決賽將於8月6日舉行。
算上本屆賽事，中國女足已經先後6次躋身奧運會女足決賽圈 。他們唯一缺席的一屆賽事是2012年倫敦奧運會 。
