報道稱 ，超将持有成票在當地時間本周一英超舉行了緊急會議 ，禁止通過了禁止老板通過出資巨額讚助來支持球隊的投赞規則 。其中 ，20家英超俱樂部參與投票 ，18票通過，紐卡反對 ，曼城棄權 。這項規則將會在下個月正式生效 ，適用於所有20家俱樂部 。由此可見 ，英超大多數俱樂部擔心沙特財團以雄厚的資本實力為俱樂部注資 。
此前 ，曼城因為涉嫌阿布紮比財團以讚助的名義向俱樂部注資 ，比如，旗下的伊蒂哈德航空公司擁有曼城球場的冠名權 ，並且直接出現在球衣上 。曼城行為被《明鏡周刊》曝光後 ，並遭到了歐足聯的懲罰 。不過後來曼城通過上訴推翻了歐冠禁令。顯然 ，英超俱樂部還是擔心像沙特財團這樣的資本產生非法競爭 。
不過 ，紐卡俱樂部方麵認為這次規則修正是不合理的 ，他們認為規則變更將會暫時禁止涉及俱樂部已有的業務關聯的商業合同。
