英格蘭和丹麥的英格半決賽在賽後引起了巨大爭議 ，主要因為三獅軍團在加時賽上半場獲得了一粒點球 ，兰判C罗而這個點球從慢鏡頭來看，点主斯特林在禁區內和丹麥球員接觸後倒地的裁曾吹掉程度不至於判罰點球 ，而且在斯特林突入禁區之前 ，绝杀禁区球場上出現了兩個皮球，球揭球但當值主裁判馬克列並沒有吹停比賽 ，幕战此外馬克列也沒有親自到場邊去觀看VAR來確定這個點球的无视判罰 ，這明顯是内手有點草率的 。賽後 ，英格這引發了巨大的兰判C罗輿論 ，甚至有網友將本場最佳PS成了主裁馬克列 。点主
其實，裁曾吹掉馬克列這名裁判大家恐怕對他不是绝杀禁区非常陌生 。此前他的球揭球一些爭議判罰也引起了大家的熱議。今年3月份的歐洲區世預賽 ，他擔任葡萄牙和塞爾維亞比賽的主裁 。臨近尾聲時，場上比分還是2-2 ，不過在比賽的最後時刻 ，C羅攻入一粒絕殺進球，但是邊裁認定皮球沒有越過門線 ，C羅找邊裁理論的時候，當值主裁馬克列站在了自己助理裁判這邊 ，並向C羅出示了黃牌警告（當時沒有VAR ，但是皮球明顯越過球門線） 。事後，馬克列向葡萄牙隊表示歉意 ，並單麵宣布自己不再和這位邊裁合作 ，並且將自己裁判組的邊裁更換成其他人 。
此外 ，本屆歐洲杯的揭幕戰也是由馬克列擔任主裁判 。當時 ，土耳其球員禁區內明顯手球 ，不過馬克列並沒有吹罰點球 。賽後歐足聯裁判主管羅塞蒂公開表示這是次誤判 ，並且將當場比賽的VAR裁判貶職 。幸好，揭幕戰意大利仍然依靠實力3-0幹淨利落地擊敗了土耳其。不過這場英格蘭和丹麥的半決賽 ，馬克列還是引起了巨大爭議 ，在如此重要的比賽 ，而且是在加時賽如此重要的節點 ，判罰點球後 ，其實完全可以去場邊通過VAR再進行下確認 ，但是馬克列並沒有這麽做 。對於一名主裁判 ，這顯然是有失公允的 。
