在歐洲杯大舞台上晉級決賽 ，三獅軍團總算進步了一回。然而 ，對於英格蘭來說 ，更讓他們感到高興的是 ，球隊有可能再度染指世界大賽冠軍。數據指出 ，這是三獅軍團隊史第2次殺入世界大賽決賽 。英格蘭上一次晉級大賽決賽 ，還要追溯到遙遠的1966年 ，迄今已整整過了半個世紀 。當時 ，三獅軍團在英格蘭本土舉辦的世界杯中一路過關斬將殺入決賽 ，並最終擊敗西德奪冠 ，而那也是他們隊史第一次、也是唯一一次世界大賽冠軍 。
