9月21日 ，沙特從卡塔爾傳來消息 ，足协征战海灣足球聯盟在當地時間9月20日卡塔爾多哈召開的为支特別會議上作出決定，原計劃於今年12月底至明年1月初在伊拉克巴士拉進行的持国第25屆海灣杯賽將延至2023年1月進行。據了解 ，家队沙特足協在該項賽事延期的强赛期举問題上扮演了力推者角色，其原因是力推該協會希望沙特隊能夠集中精力打好卡塔爾世預賽亞洲區12強賽 。
海灣足球聯盟是海湾由8個國家會員協會組成的區域性足球聯盟 ，這8家會員協會分別為沙特足協 、杯延办卡塔爾足協 、沙特阿聯酋足協 、足协征战阿曼足協 、为支科威特足協 、持国巴林足協 、家队伊拉克足協 、强赛期举也門足協 。每2年舉辦1屆的海灣杯賽是該足球聯盟打造的最重要賽事 。
按照計劃 ，第25屆海灣杯賽應於今年12月24日至明年1月7日進行 ，比賽地點為伊拉克巴士拉 。但今年下半年亞洲範圍內舉辦的重大國際賽事賽程比較密集。除了12強賽外 ，作為明年卡塔爾世界杯“演習”的阿拉伯杯賽將於今年11月30日至12月18日在卡塔爾舉辦 。
由於12強賽第7 、第8輪比賽將於明年1月下旬至2月1日進行 。因此一旦海灣杯賽如期進行 ，那麽對相關各隊12強賽備戰、競賽造成不利影響 。受影響的就包括中國隊12強賽同組對手沙特隊 。 據悉 ，沙特足協為此提出了將新一屆海灣杯賽延期舉辦的動議 。而在當地時間20日進行的海灣足球聯盟特別代表大會上 ，與會各協會代表一致同意將第25屆海灣杯賽延期至2023年1月舉行的方案 。上一屆海灣杯賽在2019年舉辦 ，巴林隊在決賽中擊敗沙特隊後奪得當屆賽事冠軍 。
