值得一提的是 ，萊萬去年夏天時便與金球獎擦肩而過 。當時《法國足球》官方宣布 ，由於缺乏足夠公平公正的評選條件 ，2020年的金球獎取消 ，這引起了不小的爭議 ，而萊萬正是那一年度贏得金球的最大熱門人選 。萊萬在2019-2020賽季表現出色 ，他在47場各項賽事中打進55球助攻10次 ，打破了多項個人紀錄 。與此同時 ，萊萬當時還率領拜仁獲得了德甲、德國杯和歐冠在內的六冠王 ，並且榮獲了國際足聯（FIFA）評選的2020年度最佳球員 。
此前有消息稱，《法國足球》有補發2020年金球獎的計劃 ，他們打算在12月5日同時頒發2020年和2021年金球獎 ，但這並沒有成真 。在早些時候《天空體育》公布的金球獎最新賠率中 ，梅西排名第一 ，萊萬排名第二 。
