根據國際足聯的相邻規則 ，世界杯16強賽將是组交相鄰兩個組的前兩名交叉對陣 ，即小組第一對陣鄰組的望决小組第二：1A-2B 、1B-2A 、世界赛相1C-2D 、杯淘1D-2C 、汰赛1E-2F 、对阵1F-2E 、相邻1G-2H 、组交H1-2G 。望决
另外 ，世界赛相16強賽將分為兩個半區，1A-2B 、1C-2D 、1E-2F 、1G-2H在同一個半區；1B-2A 、1D-2C 、1F-2E 、1H-2G在另一個半區 。
因此，外界所關注的“梅羅”能否在世界杯賽場對決也有了答案 ：阿根廷在C組 、葡萄牙在H組 ，如果兩隊都以小組第一或小組第二出線 ，將會分在不同半區，隻可能在決賽相遇；如果兩隊出線的小組名次不同 ，那有可能提前在半決賽遇見 。
