在英格蘭隊正式開啟本屆歐洲杯征程之前 ，欧洲便有《太陽報》等一幹英媒放風 ，杯帅稱三獅主帥索斯蓋特是位最稳主“本屆歐洲杯上帥位最穩定的主教練 ，沒有之一”，帅此斯盖即無論三獅最終成績如何 ，足总都不會動搖英足總同索斯蓋特繼續合作的欲索约決心 。隨著英格蘭晉級16強 ，特续他在這個崗位上的欧洲前途看起來更加光明 。英足總CEO布林厄姆接受《每日郵報》采訪時，杯帅透露了與三獅主帥續約的位最稳主念頭 ，且無論1/8決賽英德冤家相遇的帅此斯盖最終結果如何 ，都不會動搖足總的足总想法 。
“我們希望由他繼續帶隊 ，欲索约當然 ，特续是欧洲在現有合同之上 。索斯蓋特知道我們對於他的看法 ，他知道我們認為他幹得很好 ，且希望他能繼續率隊 。本屆錦標賽結束後，我們會進行正式談話 ，但如果你現在問我 ，我會說是的 ，我們希望由他繼續帶領英格蘭隊前進 。”
“索斯蓋特是否暗示過願意續約 ？我們還沒上升到那個層麵的對話 。他得到了我們堅定不移的支持，原因是足總認為他在場內場外都進行了出色的工作 。”索斯蓋特在2016年接手了三獅“最短命”主帥阿勒代斯留下的帥位 ，並在2018年俄羅斯世界杯後與足總續約4年 ，這意味著他的帶隊時間將一直延長到2022年卡塔爾世界杯 。而現在 ，足總顯然希望索斯蓋特繼續增加率領三獅軍團的年限 。
