現年28歲的和共孫興慜在2015年加盟熱刺 ，曾隨隊殺進歐冠決賽 ，未好但在波切蒂諾執教期間孫興慜大多數時候隻能作為進攻僚機 。2019年11月穆裏尼奧成為熱刺主帥，進一步發揮出了孫興慜的攻擊力。本賽季孫興慜在英超聯賽打進14球 ，在歐聯杯打進4球 ，在聯賽杯打進1球 ，他和凱恩組成了英超攻擊力最強的鋒線搭檔 。
而穆裏尼奧在執教期間也多次力挺孫興慜。在第31輪英超聯賽熱刺主場1-3負於曼聯 ，比賽中麥克托米奈對孫興慜犯規在先 ，因此卡瓦尼的進球被判無效。賽後曼聯主帥索爾斯克亞公開批評孫興慜摔倒太誇張 ，而穆裏尼奧立即挺身而出為愛將辯解 。雖然穆裏尼奧在執教生涯中和很多球員有過矛盾 ，但在球場上拚勁十足積極跑動的孫興慜卻是穆裏尼奧最喜歡的那類球員 。
