北京時間5月16日 ，曼城梅西據英國《太陽報》報道 ，被告镑税巴薩球星梅西的签下未來又產生了變數 ，英超豪門曼城被告知他們有機會簽下梅西 ，需提薪隻要藍月軍團能提供高達50萬鎊的供万稅後周薪 。
梅西與巴薩的后周合同在今夏到期 ，雙方至今未能就續約達成一致 ，曼城梅西而梅西的被告镑税父親豪爾赫也在積極地為兒子籌劃未來 。雖然在拉波爾塔成為巴薩主席後，签下梅西留隊的需提薪可能性大大提升 ，但拉波爾塔誌在今夏簽下哈蘭德，供万而梅西則麵臨著大幅降薪的后周可能。
《太陽報》表示 ，曼城梅西據他們了解到的被告镑税消息 ，對於未來 ，签下梅西希望得到一份為期一年的合同 ，並且有額外續約一年的選項 。而對於薪水，梅西的心理價位為年薪2500萬英鎊。如果梅西以這樣的年薪加盟英超 ，那麽他將成為英超曆史上的打工皇帝 。但由於梅西的零轉會費和巨大的商業效應，仍然有球隊對其虎視眈眈，瓜迪奧拉的曼城就在等待著梅西方麵的進一步打算 。
而現在就有一個機會擺在他們眼前 。據悉 ，梅西在巴薩的周薪達到100萬鎊 ，但如果續約，梅西的薪水會大幅降低，甚至有可能減少三分之二之多。梅西雖然接受在一定程度上的降薪 ，但如此降薪幅度 ，讓梅西的團隊在考慮是否還有其它的可能性 ，他們想看看是否會有金主提出更好的報價 。
除了曼城 ，巴黎聖日耳曼同樣有這個財力，此外還要算上曼聯和切爾西 。不過切爾西方麵對梅西的興趣寥寥，而曼聯主帥索爾斯克亞更想打造一支年輕化的紅魔。而曼城現在就需要對此做出決定 ，因為梅西很可能在一到兩年以後去大聯盟養老，而曼城恰恰就有提供這個機會的便利條件 。此外，隨著阿圭羅的離開 ，曼城的鋒線也需要引援 ，並且藍月軍團看上去很難說服熱刺放行凱恩 。
