歐洲杯此前的杯卫衛冕冠軍魔咒非常恐怖 ，2012年之前沒有球隊能夠衛冕成功 ，冕冠魔咒免疫這一魔咒最終被西班牙隊打破 。军新皆中仅队但最近兩屆歐洲杯衛冕冠軍都在淘汰賽首輪出局 ，葡西進入21世紀以後 ，招年衛冕冠軍能通過淘汰賽首輪的欧洲也隻有西班牙隊 。
葡萄牙此次在歐洲杯中被比利時隊淘汰 ，杯卫衛冕冠軍沒能打進8強 。冕冠魔咒免疫而2016年歐洲杯時 ，军新皆中仅队衛冕冠軍在1/8決賽階段被意大利隊2-0擊敗 ，葡西鬥牛軍團完成歐冠三連冠的招年夢想被終結了。
此外在2008年歐洲杯中 ，欧洲衛冕冠軍希臘隊甚至都沒有完成小組出線，杯卫三戰結束後墊底出局 。冕冠魔咒免疫而2004年歐洲杯 ，當時衛冕冠軍法國隊被希臘隊1-0擊敗 ，1/4決賽出局 ，也是淘汰賽首輪就跪了 。
而千禧年歐洲杯 ，衛冕冠軍德國隊在擁有英格蘭隊 、羅馬尼亞隊和葡萄牙隊的小組賽階段就出局 。1996年歐洲杯 ，衛冕冠軍丹麥隊也是在小組賽階段就宣布出局 。1992年歐洲杯，當時淘汰賽晉級即是4強 ，衛冕冠軍荷蘭隊被最終的冠軍丹麥隊淘汰 。而1988年歐洲杯決賽階段 ，1984年衛冕冠軍法國隊在小組賽出局；1984年歐洲杯時，衛冕冠軍德國隊小組賽階段就出局 。而1980年歐洲杯時，衛冕冠軍捷克斯洛伐克在決賽階段小組賽出局 。
上一個能夠通過淘汰賽首輪的衛冕冠軍還是1976年歐洲杯的德國隊 ，當時日耳曼戰車在半決賽中力克南斯拉夫闖入決賽，但最終負於捷克斯洛伐克。
