北京時間4月19日淩晨 ，欧超欧足欧冠歐足聯通過官方網站宣布 ，联赛联官新的扩军歐冠改製方案已經通過審議 ，這意味著自2024年期歐冠聯賽將從32支隊伍擴軍至36支隊伍。至队根據數據統計，硬刚歐冠擴軍後每個賽季歐冠聯賽的欧超欧足欧冠比賽場次數比擴軍前多處100多場。值得一提的联赛联官是 ，歐冠擴軍的扩军提議此前就引起了歐洲豪門的不滿 ，這也是至队目前熱議的歐洲超級聯賽誕生的導火索之一 。
目前的硬刚歐冠聯賽參賽隊伍是32支 ，小組賽階段分為8個小組 ，欧超欧足欧冠每個小組4支隊伍 ，联赛联官小組賽采取主客場循壞賽製 ，扩军小組第一和第二直接進入淘汰賽 ，至队第三名參加歐聯杯 。歐冠決賽之前 ，采取的都是主客場兩回合淘汰賽 。在歐冠擴軍之後 ，上述比賽模式將更改為由36支球隊參賽的瑞士比賽模式 ，第一階段的賽程按照分檔抽簽進行 ，每支球隊需要參加10場比賽 ，其中主客場比賽各為5場 ，積分前8名直接晉級歐冠十六強 ，而從排名第九位開始的16支丟對進行附加賽 ，決出另外8個十六強的名額 。
新增的4個參賽名額中的1個將分配給歐戰積分排名第五的聯賽的第四名 ，目前排名第五的聯賽是法甲 ，這意味著屆時五大聯賽參加歐冠的球隊數量都為4支 。其餘3個新增名額將按照過去5個賽季在歐戰中的表現來進行分配 ，這會讓更多聯賽成績不佳但歐戰表現亮眼的球隊參加歐冠的機會 。換而言之 ，歐足聯希望參賽球隊更加重視歐冠賽事 。歐足聯官方稱 ，新賽製將在2024-2025賽季的歐冠中首次啟用。
歐足聯主席在接受采訪時表示：“擴軍後的歐冠賽事將繼續捍衛任何歐洲球隊參加歐冠的夢想，它將會為歐洲足壇的每一個人帶來長期的活力 、繁榮和進步，而不是小小的 、自我選擇的壟斷組織（歐洲超級聯賽）。”
