過去一個賽季 ，曝西馬德裏競技在西甲賽場上高開低走 ，蒙尼马竞一度以超過10分優勢領跑西甲積分榜 。达成收官階段，续约协议馬德裏競技頻頻丟分 ，再签讓皇馬和巴塞羅那看到了翻盤的年合年希望 ，慶幸的同至是 ，最後兩輪均是曝西逆轉絕殺 ，讓床單軍團以2分優勢奪得西甲冠軍 ，打破了西超雙雄對聯賽冠軍獎杯的壟斷，這也是馬德裏競技自2014年以來 ，首次奪得西甲冠軍 。奪得這座冠軍獎杯後 ，馬德裏競技主帥西蒙尼獲得了外界一致好評 ，這也使得俱樂部決定再與他續簽一份新合同 ，讓他留在床單軍團繼續執教 。
據悉 ，西蒙尼與馬德裏競技的合同2022年夏天到期，目前雙方就續約達成了協議 ，接下來雙方會續簽一份新的2年期合同 ，合約期至2024年夏天 。如果履行完這份新合同 ，那麽西蒙尼在馬德裏競技執教的時間將接近13年 。
西蒙尼於2011年12月拿起馬德裏競技的教鞭 ，在他的帶領下，床單軍團完成蛻變 ，成為了繼巴塞羅那和皇馬之後 ，西班牙足壇第三極。迄今為止 ，西蒙尼帶領馬德裏競技拿到了2個西甲冠軍 ，2個歐聯杯冠軍 、2個歐洲超級杯冠軍 、1個國王杯冠軍和1個西班牙超級杯冠軍 ，唯一的遺憾是 ，阿根廷人未能幫助床單軍團奪得歐冠冠軍，他曾在2014年和2016年兩度殺進歐冠決賽 ，但都輸給了同城死敵皇馬。
