去年夏天，上任科曼離開了荷蘭隊 ，荷兰名宿德波爾成為了荷蘭隊的足协新任主帥。執教荷蘭隊的今明将会加尔即刻前12場比賽 ，德波爾獲得了5勝4平3負的两天成績 ，成績沒有亮點 。面范在本屆歐洲杯中，下周德波爾帶隊荷蘭在小組賽三連勝晉級 ，上任但是荷兰同組的對手實力較弱 ，荷蘭沒有遭遇挑戰 。
在1/8淘汰賽對戰捷克的比賽中 ，荷蘭發揮低迷 ，0-2完敗給對手 ，球隊也未能殺入歐洲杯的八強。而就在這場比賽後不久 ，荷蘭足協就宣布了解雇德波爾的消息。接下來 ，荷蘭要踢世界杯預選賽 ，為明年年底的世界杯正賽名額而戰 。因此對於荷蘭足協來說 ，盡快選出主帥是非常必要的 。
在危難之際 ，此前曾經兩次執教過荷蘭國家隊的範加爾成為了媒體追捧的對象 。而來自《荷蘭電訊報》的消息 ，荷蘭足協也渴望範加爾執教國家隊 ，足協高層將在今天與明天與範加爾就擔任荷蘭國家隊主帥一職進行交流 。據悉 ，一旦範加爾同意執教荷蘭 ，足協會在下周提交給足協監事會審核和批準。若通過，範加爾會立即出任荷蘭主帥 。
《荷蘭電訊報》稱 ，荷蘭足協也不會在一棵樹上吊死，除了範加爾外 ，荷蘭還有B計劃與C計劃 。其中B計劃是一名荷蘭籍的主帥 ，而C計劃是外籍主帥 。但不到萬不得已 ，荷蘭不會邀請外籍主帥 。
